Alone--But Not Lonely

Author: Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

You might have felt lonely at some time or another in your life?not in the literal sense?in a spiritual sense.

Have you felt that somehow you were nameless and faceless to others? We can feel spiritually alone when being passed over for a promotion, or a raise or rejected by a loved one. You might have felt it when a close friend or partner ignored your feelings. Or you might have felt it in a relationship when something important to you was dismissed as insignificant.

Whether it is while existing in a less-than-fulfilling relationship, a dead-end job or lack of connections with old traditions or with family members who don?t seem to understand us or want to take the time to listen. At some time in our lives, we can relate to feeling lonely.

So what can we do when we feel the pangs of loneliness, faceless or nameless? Understand that even with all that one has one can feel just as lonely and just as alone as someone who is literally homeless. Once you understand your basic desires to be validated, you can begin to provide yourself with the emotional sustenance you need and also learn compassion for your unique needs?even when those around you do not understand. When you understand and improve any limiting beliefs about being alone, even in a crowd, then you can begin to create from within the spiritual connectedness you need. See articles:
